Hello! My name is Mariah. I am a student of sustainable design and architecture. I also restore vintage campers! (The COMET is of course the natural culmination of these passions). I am an avid Tiny House advocate and participant (for more on the tiny house movement, look here: http://tinyhouseblog.com/ and here: http://www.tinyhousetalk.com/ ). I’ve always been able to see the potential in old camper trailers. When I was in high school, I thought I would just buy one, decorate it, and live in it. Then I found out about the Tiny House Movement and I felt like I fit right in. Sustainable design became an essential part of my life. I realized how many old trailers there are that either get junked or just left out in the cold, perfectly usable structures made with valuable materials. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to breathe a new, eco-friendly life into something used. I really hope The COMET can become a model for other people looking to live more sustainably and more healthy on a budget. I’ve got DIY attitude to boot so The COMET will be created as cheaply and as efficiently as possible. I really believe that living in a tiny space using only renewable resources is not a sacrifice, but a step towards freedom and happiness.

Coincidentally, my girlfriend Kim just went crazy (well, crazier,) and bought an 1969 Avalon very much like yours, and we’re in the planning stages of a complete rebuild. She wants to make it into a fully-equipped, tiny house, which will be quite a challenge. She wants to make it into a functional installation piece. I’m not sure how that’s going to work.
Would you be willing to share your SketchUp model with us? Even having just the outer shell would help us a bunch. If that isn’t something that you want to do, no worries.

You’re girlfriend sounds awesome! Her and I are on the same page. The COMET is going to function as my full time tiny house as well (it’s like my super-affordable version of a tiny house on wheels!). Also, sounds like we have to exact same trailer. I am curious about what you mean by “functional installation piece”, like an art piece? Sounds cool.

Wow, love what you are doing! How do you find the cool workshops… like the one on green houses? Or creative small houses. I’m in the Northern California central valley area.

I found these workshops at the Yestermorrow design/build school, which is here on the East Coast in Vermont. I’m sure that there are many other great workshops where you are as well. However, I know people travel from all over the world to attend Yestermorrow classes – they are so good! We’re building a tiny house right now in fact, and the school has become a hub of tiny house activity in the last few years.

How are you? I’ve recently seen your youtube video and became motivated to start remodeling my new camper that i just bought.
Its used but in pretty fair condition! The goal is to live in it until I can build a Cob house for my family! In meantime I gotta think of some ways to incorporate a fenced in area /courtyard in front of the camper to allow my daughter to play safely! Project starts tomorrow. Its Time to pray for some good ideas.
